The personal essay often suffers from having to be beautiful, always stops short right before things get truly personal, weird, or messy. The devil truly is in the details, as they say. But maybe our liberation is in the details. Everything we need to know about ourselves or society is in what we usually stop ourselves from saying out loud. For sure, not everything must be said in all the places. But knowing why we don’t say things in certain places can be helpful. Are we not saying the thing, because we benefit systemically from that thing not being said? Who gets hurt in that dynamic? Maybe the not saying it comes from a place of patience, love, and letting things remain unclear. It’s just nice to try to understand why we hold back.
From a place of fear, comes the most uninspired ideas. Basic writing, basic language, clichés, tropes, quick and dirty actions devoid of care.
Only from love, can our best ideas flourish. Can we see ideas/solutions that are expansive in nature. Creative beyond the scarcity mindset that we must decolonize our hearts of.
